Artist Statement

My work is an exploration of formal elements intended to create jewelry and objects that are visually engaging. The methods I take are different for each object, but the final product is always meant to be appealing to the eye. Whether by means of hand fabrication, computer aided design and manufacturing, or a combination of these and numerous other tools and materials, each object becomes an entity in itself, fulfilling its purpose of aesthetic beauty. Sweeping forms pivot and swirl around the finger and into the air, light plays upon smooth surfaces or a collection of multiples, creating a dynamic show of light and shadow. Sheets of silver are manipulated, pierced, and layered, revealing choice elements of a design while concealing others. Multiple materials with different qualities are combined, often including jarring bursts of color, keeping the eye engaged with the object.

Due to the nature of jewelry and objects, human interaction is integral to their purpose, and I consider this aspect in my designs as well. While an object can be worn or interacted with in a literal sense, I take this one step further. Not only can a USB drive holder be used for its purpose, but its use triggers and light, interacting with the form itself. A brooch or neckpiece is not just worn, but also contains items of importance for the wearer, which are accessed through moving parts. A ring is put on which twirls and spins according to the wearer’s movements. These interactions connect the object with the wearer, and provide exiting visual stimuli to the wearer and the viewer.
